A Message from our Director
Dear Friends,
As I write this on Veteran's Day, two bald eagles are being released by Raptor Conservation Alliance volunteers to honor our veterans and active service members. We are honored to provide care to these incredible emblems of our country.
Although 2024 has not been a record year for raptor admissions, food expenses have gone way up- over $50,000 already; this is not counting donations of fish and rabbits for eagles. Many raptors, even adults, were starving on admission. This may be due to prey being scarce in this 3rd year of extreme drought, which has left this area at least 20" below normal rainfall. Nevertheless, RCA managed to raise a good number of young raptors to independence, including 4 young turkey vultures.
Some surprising admissions this year have been: 2 short eared owls; 2 long- eared owl chicks; 2 burrowing owls; and 1 saw-whet owl. Will we see snowy owls this winter? Stay tuned...
More raptors are due to be released this fall. We have an awesome crew of volunteers across the state who are dedicated to returning these amazing raptors back to the wild. But your support and commitment are also vital to our success. Please continue to help us recover raptors and educate the public about their value.
Thank you,
Betsy Finch, Director
